Macedonian Coat of Arms to have Red Star removed

The five-pointed red star on Macedonia's official coat of arms could soon be consigned to history.

The government has already decided to remove the star, which dates back to the period when the country was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, local media reveals on Friday.

The ruling centre-right VMRO-DPNME appear set to garner the required two-thirds majority in parliament needed to push the measure through. The move also enjoys the support of most ethnic communities .

The government proposal is expected to be put before parliament soon.

Macedonia is among the last former socialist countries to remove ideological elements from its state symbols, the daily comments.

Unlike the flag, which had its red star removed almost immediately after the country proclaimed independence from the former Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, Macedonia’s coat of arms remained unchanged.

I don't think a lion will end up there though ... opposition will call it a VMRO ambition. They don't own it, it would be a shame to see political bickering deny the rightful coat of arms for Macedonians. The lion is essential for our coat of arms.

Looking at the old coat of arms,We've allways had the sun emblem.Why didn't greece object to it being used before??I would prefer the lion to be there.There is nothing as good as the lavce !Seeing it's the state coat of arms,why can't we have the 16 star sun symbol.Maybe we could have suggestions as to what should be on the coat of arms.

I have mentioned this in the past, in today's circumstances I think the coat of arms should be the Macedonian sun, and the state flag should be the Lion, at least until a time when they can be swapped with each other.

Provided this happens, VMRO will need to immediately remove the lion symbol and replace it with something else, as the Lion pre-dates the existence of VMRO. Even the black and red striped flag will do, as it was used by VMRO revolutionaries in the past.

The VMRO-NP party filed the initiative for collecting 10.000 signatures needed for a formal motion for change of coat of arms.

VMRO-NP's proposes that a golden-yellow lion at red background be depicted on Macedonia's coat of arms. If the needed signatures are collected in due time, the proposal will be put to vote in parliament.

VMRO-NP expects support by all political parties and citizens regardless of their nationality, as they reckon that the golden-yellow lion on red background is a symbol of unification.

The motion requires a two-third vote in parliament to win an approval. VMRO-NP believes that such a support is achievable.

"If the deputies vote on the law on new coat of arms, I believe that the law will be passed. I don't agree that we should wait for the Republic of Macedonia to join the European Union and NATO beforehand, as benchmarks are clear and coat of arms is not among them," VMRO-NP leader Marjan Dodovski said.

The party reckons that if parliament approves collecting of signatures in the period till October 10, the needed 10.000 signatures would be collected by October 23, the VMRO Day.

According to VMRO-NP, the removal of the red star from Macedonia's coat of arms could cause additional confusion and budget spending, and such a move is seen as a cosmetic change of the national insignia.

I always find it funny when reading the garbage spewed up by SDS, nice when most of them live in East Macedonia and have probably never seen an Albanian in their life.

The Hora Partiya (in Macedonian Narodna Partija) should change their symbol to the Bulgar coat of arms and then walk around Macedonian villages looking for votes.

За ВМРО-ДПМНЕ златно-жолтиот лав е посакувано решение, но ќе ја поддржат иницијативата на "народњаците" доколку тие обезбедат двотретинско и бадентерово мнозинство

Златно - жолтиот лав на црвена основа како решение за нов државен грб ќе остане пуста желба на ВМРО-вците доколку не обезбедат двотретинско и бадентерово мнозинство во Парламентот. Од ВМРО-НП вчера покренаа иницијативата за Закон, според кој Земскиот грб од 1620 година се предлага за нов државен грб на Република Македонија.

В.д. претседателот на партијата Марјан Додовски, кој ги поднесе потребните сто граѓански потписи во Собранието, очекува голема поддршка од граѓаните, иако албанските партии експресно се спротивставија на нивниот предлог.

Според него, златно-жолтиот лав е симболот на обединување започнувајќи од Илинденското востание од 1903 година.
- Ако Македонците, Албанците, Власите, Србите... тогаш можеле заедно да се борат и таа борба да продолжи за независна Македонија, зошто тоа денес да не може да биде потврдено и со нов грб, рече Додовски. Ако иницијативата биде прифатена, во ВМРО-НП велат дека за еден месец ќе ги соберат потребниите 10.000 потписи и на денот на ВМРО - 23 октомври, предлог-текстот за нов грб ќе го достават до Собранието. Веќе имале изготвено медиумска кампања за собирање на потписите.

Иницијативата на ВМРО-НП доаѓа откако владините партнери ВМРО-ДПМНЕ и ДУИ договорија да се тргне само петокраката од сегашниот грб како привремено решение до влезот во ЕУ. Од најголемата владејачка партија велат дека за нив златно-жолтиот лав е посакувано решение, но дека за усвојување во Парламентот е потребно двотретинско и бадентерово мнозинство.
- Ако се обезбеди доволен политички консензус за оваа иницијатива, ние сме спремни да го поддржиме предлог - законот, изјави пратеникот на ВМРО-ДПМНЕ Илија Димовски.
Албанските партии, пак, бараат државните симболи да ја отсликуваат мултиетничноста на државата и за нив ова е непристоен предлог.

За СДСМ нов грб во моментов не е приоритетно прашање. Сметаат дека иницијативата треба да биде покрената и водена во некое друго време и на начин што ќе гарантира широк меѓупартиски и меѓуетнички консензус.

I think all Macedonian symbols should be listed and to be combined into one new.

The Sun, the Lion, The Eagle of Eastern Roman Empire, the holy glagolic script of our saints and Bukefal (alexander's horse).
(Even today in Macedonia the wild macedonian mustang can be found free living in Galichnik region.)

There are so many symbols. All combined in one would look very stylish, and show our immense cultural heritage.
