The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) expressed its deep concern today over the decision of the Government of Albania to eliminate sections in its upcoming Census forms designated for declaring a person’s specific minority status. The original version of the draft Census form included selection options for all minorities in Albania, including Macedonians. Albania’s government agency responsible for the Census has removed these categories and, instead, has made available only the options of “Albanian” and “Other”.

UMD believes that this misconduct by the Government of Albania is just its most recent effort to deny Macedonian identifying citizens of Albania their basic human rights and, as such, to further assimilate them. UMD calls upon the Government of Albania to make every effort to respect the civil rights of their Macedonian and other minorities, and to abide by the principles outlined by the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, which it ratified in 1999. Furthermore, UMD calls upon the Government of Albania to cease all intimidation of students studying the Macedonian language (as well as their parents and teachers) in the Golo Brdo region (and elsewhere in Albania) and to offer access to Macedonian language instruction in the public school system. Finally, UMD asks Albania’s neighbors, as well as other countries with which Albania has relations, to hold Albania accountable for its mistreatment of the Macedonian minority in Albania.

UMD just couldn't help itself. They decided to promote the Framework Agreement in an afterthought:

On a related note, it is instructive that while the Government of Albania treats its Macedonian identifying citizens in the abhorrent manner described above, the Government of Macedonia takes a very different approach to its Albanian identifying minority: it guarantees full civil rights, including the right to study Albanian up to a University-level education, and to check off “Albanian” in the upcoming April 2011 Macedonian Census.

Tom, I picked up on the duplicity and contradictions some time ago. You should read the UMD Press Release about calling for an end to the talks. Its only when you get down to the fine print at the end of the article, that you realise UMD has entirely contradicted the content in the first half of its text.

Have UMD been honest about anything?

Its such a shame the UMD have the potential to have the backing of the entire Macedonian diaspora globally if the voice of the diaspora was upheld and honoured. They have the potential to effect change with RoM and the potential to have every Macedonian behind them if they were affiliated with the Macedonian cause.

I dont understand how RoM is backed to the hilt with every stupid idiotic policy change and this business of ALbanian studied to university level MUST CEASE IMMEDIATELY.
I f the Albanian government is denying Macedonians study classes in the Macedonian language and using genocidic tactics against our minority in mala Prespa, then why the fuck is RoM continuing its support of the Albanian refugees and minorities , especially in regards to their inclusion as a minority group in the census???
When is Macedonia going to wake up and smell the roses and stop being pricks and thorns against its own people?
Why is their a census being held in Macedonia? Especailly when anarchy will prevail as I know many Macedonians within RoM that will not lie down for the Albanians anymore.
Why is Macedonia still continuing its fucked up negotations process?

STOP> stop negotiating our name and identiry for the love of God
In the year 2010, we our very identity is hanging by a thread

I am tired of reading bullshit scare mongering tactics from some on this forum that state change is coming and they must enter the EU and NATO and enter under a different name. What the fuck for?
Its like we are poised on a tightrope that is about to snap, walking along it , hanging by a thread because we must. Dont walk the tightrope.
Encourage trade and foreign economic investment and Macedonia, I have always said is paradise on earth. Beautiful. Underdeveloped with the promotion of tourism. We have open borders, no requirement for visas, what is the EU for?

UMD, if you want your organisation to flourish and grow, then the voice of the Macedonian diaspoa must be heard. Not the voice of corrupt officials and politicians in RoM that are only interested in retiring outside of RoM. They dont care for our name or identity. We do.
UMD must stop abiding by the framework agreement and endorsing the interim accord. UMD must stop abiding by the wishes of a handful of public servants within RoM and start acting and listening to the diaspora.
There are so many intelligent and well educated Macedonian people out there, that would do anything to retain our identity, our name, and fight for our basic human rights for our minorities, for the acknowledgment of our very existence.
UMD will not flourish, there are too many people that are very disappointed with the lack of transparency. Reading Pelister's comments disappoints me further, about back room handshakes to the detriment of our very survival.
It is the diaspora that needs to influence the decisionmakers within RoM. Not RoM influencing the diaspora, namely UMD
No prefixes, no suffixes, no more changing flags or endorsing the framework agreement, no more negotatiating.
That is the only way we can work collaboratively for the most important thing most of us hold in our hearts, our soul , and carry in our blood. For the love of God, for us. Macedonians

            Framework Agreement

Nobody is promoting the Framework Agreement.

In 1991, Macedonia's Parliament passed its constitution stating "Macedonia has been constituted as a national state of the Macedonian nation in which full civic equality and permanent co-living is secured to the Macedonian people and the Albanians, the Turks, the Vllachs, the Romas and the other nationalities living in the Republic of Macedonia."

Macedonia has always been home to Macedonians, Albanians, etc...and "Albanian" has always been on the Macedonian census. This is not something the Framework Agreement decided.

In addition, Albanians have always had full rights in Macedonia and always had the right to study Albanian in primary, secondary school, etc...

So how does UMD promote the Framework Agreement by stating an obvious that has been in existence since 1991? An obvious, which unfortunately is not the same for Macedonians in Albania.

What do you mean always? Albanians haven't "always" been in Macedonia, but perhaps the UMD believe they have, which is why you stated that you understand the frustrations that ethnic Albanians feel regarding some apparent 'mistakes' in the encyclopedia relating to their presence in Macedonia.

It is funny that again everyone is turning everything into a UMD matter. Does anyone care about the Macedonian minority in Albania and the fact that they are excluded yet again on the official Albanian census?

Meto, for once can you PLEASE LISTEN to what the Macedonian people in DIASPORA are telling you? Rather then trying to fight EVERY BATTLE focus on your strengths - organizing events and promoting our Macedonian culture.

Not even Macedonia 2025 would take on the world.

When it comes from a mouthpiece like the UMD we would rather address the matter elsewhere on another thread. This thread here is just to expose your hypocrisy, nothing more.
Maybe not in large numbers like today...but there has always been Albanians in the Republic of Macedonia.
Why did you write 'Krusevo' as the title of your post? The Republic of Macedonia didn't exist at that time, and what you said was Albanians have always been in Macedonia, not the Republic of Macedonia or the Krushevo Republic. Your lack of understanding where it concerns Macedonian history is well known, in any case.

As conducting a satisfactory census of ethnic minorities is one of the country's commitments to the European Union, the Albanian government intends to conduct an official census to clarify the ethnic composition of the population in 2012

Meto, Albanians did not have a statutory right to tertiary education in Albanian until the Framework Agreement. You specifically stated "University-level educaton" in your press release. This could only have been a reference to the Framework Agreement...unless you have your facts mixed up again?

As for "full civil rights", that's something Albanians enjoy as citizens of the Macedonian state, like any other citizen. Unless of course you were alluding to certain special collective rights that they have obtained through the Framework Agreement to show how tolerant Macedonia is of extremist paramilitary groups, what was your point in making that statement?
