China step closer to owning Greece

Maybe we can start seeing some professionalism now?

    Sunday, 03 October 2010

France and Germany are facing stiff competition from the far East.

China offered on Saturday to buy Greek government bonds when Athens resumes issuing, in a show of support for the country whose debt burden pushed the euro zone into crisis and required an international bailout.

Premier Wen Jiabao made the offer at the start of a two-day visit to Greece, his first stop on a tour of Europe, and also said he wanted to boost shipping and trade ties with Athens, underscoring Beijing's use of economic strength to win friends.

"With its foreign exchange reserve, China has already bought and is holding Greek bonds and will keep a positive stance in participating and buying bonds that Greece will issue," Wen said, speaking through an interpreter.

"China will undertake a great effort to support euro zone countries and Greece to overcome the crisis."

Wen and his Greek counterpart George Papandreou said in a statement the world's nations need to coordinate their economic policies for global recovery to find a sure footing.

"The global economy shows signs of gradual recovery but many uncertainties remain," the two leaders said in the statement, issued on Saturday by Papandreou's office after the two men met in Athens.

In addition to seeing economic opportunities in Greece, China may calculate its support of a struggling European country will help deflect international criticism of its trade policies and its refusal to let its yuan currency appreciate sharply.

Wen did not specify how much Greek debt China would be willing to buy or which Chinese entities would buy the bonds.

Chinese state entities have been generally conservative about investing in foreign financial markets and the Chinese government faces domestic political criticism over losses incurred by these entities during the global financial crisis.

We don't need to send a lot of them, just a couple of hundreds of millions of them should be enough. I guess China will not even notice they're missing

On Delchev's sarcophagus you can read the following inscription: "We swear the future generations to bury these sacred bones in the capital of Independent Macedonia. August 1923 Illinden"

Apparently China wants to build the Worlds largest plastic extrusion factory in greece where they plan to make plastic dog turds...

There's something really symbolic about fake dog shit with the 'Made in Greece' stamp on the bottom of it...

                          This is bad news.

Closer Sino-"greek" ties is something we don't need.

                            Not necessarily.

China is pretty staunch in its' support for Macedonia and Macedonia's name. Having increased Chinese influence over Greece, may not turn out to be such a bad thing.

Whilst China may be stepping in to buy up so many of those Greek bonds that the French and German banks are selling, it provides the French and the Germans an easier 'way out' of their entanglement with the Greek economy.

When they key players in the EU are no longer held back by their financial commitments, which is what forced them to 'save Greece' this time around, you just might see them start ignoring and opposing many of Greece's irrational positions, policies and practices.

I agree with your last point. Didn't think about that.

I'm not saying China will reverse its decision to recognise us. I was thinking that if they have closer ties to China, China will be less likely to side with us on future crucial pro-Macedonian initiatives or even cool our relations with them to some degree.

What do you think about the German-Macedonian agreement that was signed under our constitutional name recently?
