A group of Chinese experts were sent to Milan to help guide the Italian reaction to the crisis. The Chinese experts concluded that the Italian "lock down" was way to lax to be effective. Mass transit was still running, people were still socializing sometimes even in larger groups. So maybe that has something to do with it.

Another problem is that like with any virus you have an incubation period a period of time between infection and becoming symptomatic. I see the same thing unfolding here in New Jersey, they are waiting to see a surge in infections and deaths before they mandate anything dramatic. If you start seeing a surge in cases, those cases were first infected a week or two prior, how many people did that infected group manage to infect by the time they became symptomatic. Its exponential growth and the only way to stop it is to go to the extreme of forcing people to stay home and shut everything down. No one wants to take that step until things get bad at which point its probably too late to stop it no matter what you do.

New Jersey is basically a giant suburb of NYC, this region along with California are going to become quickly overwhelmed.

One frightening case I read about was actually here in New Jersey. 4 people in one family died from Corona, a 70+ year old woman, who was a mother to 11 children. The mother died, including 3 of her children, who were all in their 50's. On top of that 4 more of her children are in the hospital. They didn't say under what circumstances. Normally they highlight that they had underlying health problems. Its highly unlikely that 8 of them all had underlying health problems, especially the ones in their 50's.

I still have not see age breakdowns of the victims from Italy.

Are they going down the 'herd immunity' path in Jersey...or just a slow response...?

The Western nations (particularly the US) are least equipped to handle this in terms of their uncompromising attitudes to personal freedoms...nobody can lockdown an entire region or nation for that matter as well as an authoritarian system can, nor does the West have the willingness to throw lives at the problem...

100% slow response and as you put it perfectly a reluctance to take away personal freedoms. Americans are quite stubborn about being told what to do and that will be their downfall. There is already debate about whether it is legal to demand people stay indoors. As far as I'm aware any mandates that have been given thus far in any state seems to be voluntary for individuals, only businesses seem to be legally required although I'm not sure about that either. Every business owner I tall.to says the same thing, we.will.work until they tell us we cant.

Leaders know the toll this will take economically and they are too chicken shit to take the bold actions that are required. It's very simple a child can understand, if you really want it to stop spreading you keep people away from each other
That's it, simple as that. That will ruin the economy and put a lot of people in dire financial positions. Those are your choices.

Like every where else when people start to die and hospitals become overwhelmed they will take those dramatic steps but what will be the point when the virus will have already spread.

It surely will catch China's total number of infected people. Horrible!

                          Some data on Italy -

The distribution of COVID cases varies by age. People aged 40-59 are the most affected in Italy. Figures are updated weekly.

There are now more than 8,115 coronavirus cases in NYC alone.

OVERALL, more than 300,000 people are infected with coronavirus around the world, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University (JHU). That's a huge jump in the numbers. One week ago, JHU was reporting 156,396 confirmed cases. The number of deaths from Covid-19 has more than doubled from one week ago, when there were 5,833 deaths. Today there are nearly 13,000, according to JHU.

Mayor Bill de Blasio described a dire situation in New York City this morning on CNN as hospital supplies needed to fight the coronavirus pandemic run low.

"We're about 10 days away now from seeing widespread shortages of ventilators, surgical masks, the things necessary to keep a hospital system running. We have seen next to nothing from the federal government at this point. We have seen — we've made this plea publicly, privately, letters, phone calls, very — very little has arrived," de Blasio said. "The military has not been mobilized. The Defense Production Act has not been utilized in any way I can see. Not just for New York City, New York state, for a lot of the country, it feels like we're on our own at this point. We're not seeing action from the federal government."
