    Arda Okan Kurtulan

The kid born in Istanbul wants to play for Macedonia but the delay in having him issued with a Passport may result with him being lost to Turkey. Senior caps are what counts so I'm sure Milevski would give him a senior cap once his passport is issued and from that point on he is tied to the one national team.

Wollongong Macedonia create history and become the first association side and Illawarra Premier League club to make the national Australia Cup round of 32, a fantastic achievement!

They are the only Macedonian club left in the Australia Cup, they find out who they meet in the next round in due course.

        Incredible achievement:

Football NSW will have Bonnyrigg White Eagles, NWS Spirit FC, Sydney United 58 and Wollongong United representing the state at this year’s Australia Cup

Came across this 50 year anniversary video of Altona Magic (Vardar) from 2018, interesting insight about the clubs history.

A special 50th anniversary video I produced for Altona Magic Soccer Club

Not sure if there are any Altona supporters here? Was great to see them get back up to NPL1 Victoria a couple seasons ago, they have won it on 5 occasions which is pretty impressive!

I think Altona was known as a bit of a "Yugoslovenski" club back in the day.

I have heard that but not sure if any truth to it? Similarly to Rockdale there isn't much today that would allude to that, different generation though of course.

I have heard of some unpleasant atmospheres at Altona-Preston games, what is the relationship like?

Just stories from the past I suppose. Apparently Altona would refer to Preston as "Greeks" because Preston was formed by Macedonians escaping Greek oppression; Altona tried to present themselves as the "true" Macedonian club as its founders were from the Socialist Republic.

They have not shared a league with eachother in a few years but there used to be quite a conflict. Relations have improved recently though.

Broadmeadow Magic (Newcastle Macedonia) have now also qualified for the Australia Cup, alongside Newcastle Olympic (Greeks).

Interesting, Macedonians are really good at being divisive unfortunately. Good to hear relations have improved though!

Great to see another Macedonian club make it through, congrats to them. Will be interesting to see who the Macedonian clubs draw next week.

Related to our previous convos about Altona, Rockdale e.t.c look at this from Broadmeadows website https://magicfc.com.au/history/

                    “1970 – 1994 Broadmeadow Macedonia & Hamilton Red Star

The club adopted a new playing name of Broadmeadow Macedonia for seasons 1970 to 1972. The club was expelled from all competitions at the end of the 1972 season and for the two seasons that followed 1973 and 1974 the club had no administration with members playing social small sided football in local parks. In 1974 a new younger more enthusiastic committee headed by Bobby Lozanovski and Doug Pichaloff was formed and with them came the birth of Hamilton Red Star, named after Eurpoean Champions Red Star Belgrade.”

How do you go from Newcastle Macedonia to Red Star.

I believe Broadmeadow were also one of the former "Yugoslovenski" clubs. Pretty sure they are sisters with Altona (hence the "Magic" monikers). I am not 100% sure, but they may have only been known as Hamilton Red Star for a few seasons before reverting back to Broadmeadow United - Macedonia. I could be wrong though as I am not very knowledgeable on the Macedonian community in Newcastle.

Wollongong United (Macedonia) played in Australia's national football cup against a Maltese club from Melbourne. The game was meant to be at Macedonia Park but it was washed out. The players played with the Macedonian sun on their jerseys:

Great read, was exciting to see two Macedonian clubs in the round of 32. I thought Wollongong were going to snatch the game when they went up 2-1 early second half but wasn't meant to be. Broadmeadow unlucky in the end too.

Hoping for another Macedonian club or two next year. Australian football was missing this national cup and the excitement it brings, I love those small suburban grounds.

A comment in the thread also claimed the same for Cringila Lions, who were supposedly also pro-Yugoslav and against the "patriots" at Wollongong Macedonia (now Wollongong United). There were insinuations that the same was true for Altona Gate "Vardar" (now Altona Magic), who I know used to sometimes call those at Preston Makedonia "Greeks".

Is anyone able to shed some light on all this?

I don't think we can judge too harshly as many Macedonians in Australia used that flag up until the late 1980s. I do agree though that footage from Preston games during the same period shows a total absence of that flag.
