The Phanariots, very interesting group of Greek-speaking mixed bag of lollies that served their Islamic masters well while they milked the Christian provinces. I have said it before, Greek-speakers of whatever ilk or origin, as the "administrative class" above the rest of their own kin, were the greatest friends to the Turks for the duration of Ottoman rule in the Balkans. In the name of the blood and the sun, the dagger and the gun, Christ protect this soldier, a lion and a Macedonian.

A group of wealthy merchant families that resided in Istanbul and weilded much political power during the Ottoman era. At least to my knowledge, very facinating topic.I know of two tragic histories in the world- that of Ireland, and that of Macedonia. Both of them have been deprived and tormented.
