Archaeologists Unearth Biggest Stash of Byzantine Coins Ever Found in Macedonia
13 May 2010 | The landfill with coins recently discovered at the Skopje Fortress is the biggest repository of Byzantine gold and silver coins ever discovered on the territory of Macedonia, archaeologists told national media today.
In the chest, archaeologists found 44 gold coins and 76 Venetian coins, dating to the thirteenth century, or the Byzantine Era.
This is the most significant archaeological find at the Skopje Fortress, along with the Medieval lead stamps that were discovered several years ago at the site, Pasko Kuzman, archaeologist and Director of Cultural Heritage Protection in the Macedonian Ministry of Culture, told the Vreme newspaper.
Golden Byzantine coins have been unearthed at other sites in Macedonia, but rarely and in smaller quantities, he added. According to archaeologists, large quantities of bronze coins are often found at ancient sites around Macedonia.
The newly discovered gold coins are stamped with images of Byzantine kings and Biblical motifs, while the Venetian silver coins are stamped with the images of Venetian leaders.
The valuable pieces, according to Kuzman, were imported from lands with which the Byzantine rulers cooperated. The commercial ties are also well-known of the medieval rulers with the Venetian Republic, which is famous for its splendour and prosperity.
It is interesting that hundreds of coins were found in a small box, meaning that they were carefully kept and had great value for people of that time, Kuzman noted.
Currently, the gold and silver coins from the Skopje Fortress are being preserved in a laboratory and will soon be examined in detail by numismatic specialists.
The Skopje Fortress will be one of the archaeological sites that will be examined in Macedonia this year. Archaeologists are excavating the site’s central area and the plan is to restore and conserve the so-called Cyclopes Walls.Last edited by Dimko-piperkata; 05-13-2010, 01:33 PM.Comment

Ancient Figurines from Macedonia, Albania, Romania, UK and Japan Displayed in England
22 June 2010 | An exhibition, titled unearthed, brings together and displays prehistoric ceramic figurines from the Balkans and Japan for the first time, at the University of East Anglia’s Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.
Until August 29, over 100 figurines from Albania, Macedonia, Japan, Romania and the UK will be on display, including ornate Jomon figurines (known as dogu) from the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection, offering visitors the opportunity to get up close to these tiny, enigmatic figurines and to consider some of the mysteries of these ancient objects.
The exhibition, according to the centre’s official webpage poses a series of unresolved questions for art and archaeology, such as “Why were village dwellers in two unconnected regions making human forms from clay? Why were figurines commonly broken? What were they used for? What was their significance? How do they inform our understanding of early art?”
The selected pieces from Macedonia include "The Prehistoric Ladies from Macedonia,” a project by archaeologist Irena Nasteva-Kolistrkovska from the Museum of Macedonia. From Romania, a miniature sculpture from the 4600-3900 BC is included.
In addition to the actual prehistoric figurines, the exhibition explores the sculptures and the expression of the human form through a series of contemporary artworks and images, including photographs and animations.
Visitors will also be given a biscuit-fired figurine made by artist Sue Maufe, as to experience the tactile quality of the objects they will see in on display, and a book accompanying the exhibition will be available.Comment

48 диви копачи заторени во операцијата „фаланга“
Осомничени дека со години краделе, препродавале и добро егзистирале од илегално бизнис со артефакти, 48 општински советници, полицајци, бизнисмени, директори низ цела Македонија утрово се приведуваа, се пребаруваа нивните домови и работни простории. Големата полициска акција наречена „фаланга“ се одвиваше од Прилеп и Штип до Валандово и Неготино. Доказите се прибирале и осомничените се следеле една година.
- Во 60 претреси најдени се монети, керамички предмети кои биле дел од нелегални ископувања, изјави министерката за внатрешни работи Гордана Јанкуловска.
Во Штип полицајци со фантомки на главите рано изутрината упаднале во домот на сервисер на бела техника под сомнение дека “сервисирал” и историско богатство. Од над 300 штипски локалитети според експертите од штипски музеј 60 се на удар на копачите.
Див копач пред камерата на Канал 5 раскажуваше дека икона вреден артефакт пронајдена во Штипско бил продадена во Италија за 17 илјади евра.
Во Прилеп приведени се познат бизнисмен и инспектор, а осомничени се уште 12 лица дека диво ваделе и препродавале артефакти. Во Неготино уапсен е Андреј Стефановиќ сопруг на советничката Маја Митровиќ Стефановиќ, која до пред еден месец беше и директор на народниот музеј. Обвинува дека се работи за одмазда бидејќи таа излегла од коалицијата со партијата на власт.
Првиот човек на управата за заштита на културно наследство Паско Кузман во кус телефонски разговор ни рече дека не е запознаен со акцијата. Според сознанија на Канал 5 најмногу на атак на дивите копачи биле локалитетите во југо источна Македонија, но и црквите од југозападна Македонија.
Археологот од струмичкиот музеј Зоран Рујак вели дека и струмичкиот регион е се почесто мета на диви копачи.
Крадените артефакти дознава Канал 5 се пренесувале преку организирани канали за Грција, Италија и Австрија.
На археолошката карта на Македонија регистрирани се повеќе од пет илјади археолошки локалитети.

Полициска акција против дивите копачи и шверцери со артефакти

Полициската “Фаланга” го затвори бизнисот на дивите копачи. Педесетина крадци на вредно историско богатство се приведени.
Штипјани, кочанчани, струмичани, прилепчани, скопјани, тетовчани, во бизнисот биле вклучени мајстори на занаетот од осум града низ Македонија. Бизнисот вистински им цветал.
Експонати за да се наполнат неколку музеи се откриени при претресот на шеесет објекти. Златни монети, накит, керамика, предмети со непроценлива историска важност биле дел од богатството на македонските диви копачи.
Се што е пронајдено ќе се вештачи, експертите ќе трагаат по вистинската вредност.
Дивите копачи не бирале од каде го вадат историското богатство. Освен од само за нив познати наоѓалишта ги ваделе предметите и од познати археолошки наогалишта.
“Фалангата” предводена од специјалната единица на МВР се уште е во поход. Полицијата не открива детали за акцијата додека не го проверат и последниот осмомничен.
- Акцијата се уште е во тек, така да не би можеле да одиме со детали кои би го откриле идентиотетот на лицата, вели Гордана Јанкуловска министер за внатрешни.
Пронајдените предмети, како и дивите копачи ќе дојдат во Скопје. Додека едните пред истражен судија ќе одговараат како ги наоѓале вредните предмети, јавноста ќе има можност да го види пленот.

Macedonian police seize large quantity of ill-gotten antiquities
TIRANA, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Macedonian police said on Friday that they have seized thousands of valuable artifacts in a nationwide crackdown on illegal antiquities trade, the largest ever in the country's history, news from Skopje said.
"The seized amount of the artifacts is far the largest in Macedonia, and it is the result of the police operation which has been going on for almost a year," Macedonian Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska said.
In their operation in eight cities across the country early Thursday, police raided 60 homes and seized about 4000 artifacts and detained 48 people over suspicion of illegal antiquities trade.
The netted objects include 3000 coins, 20 figurines of different materials and sizes, 160 pieces of jewelry and 300 dishes of metal, stone and ceramic, with some dating back to as early as 8th century BC.
Jankulovska said criminal charges were filed against 29 of the 48 people, some of them local officials and archeologists. They are suspected of illegally excavating at archeological sites and planning selling the ill-gotten artifacts to Greece, Italy and Austria.
Macedonia is rich in history. It was reported that the western Balkan country has some 6000 registered archaeological sites on its territory.Comment

My dads friend was involved in this shit, he was a detective in Prilep. He couldn't keep his mouth shut and was telling almost all his friends about this. He was also threatening to beat up and kill Prilep's mayor, but the mayor is from VMRO and the detective is in jail now.
He's in jail for selling them, not for threatening the mayor.Comment
