Russian Orthodox Church recognizes Macedonian Church

https://www.minareport.com/russian-o...donian-church/

The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church recognized the autocephaly of the Macedonian Orthodox Church Ohrid Archbishopric.

The Synod decided to thank the Lord God for resolving the issue of the status of the Orthodox Church in Macedonia on a canonical basis and to recognize the Macedonian Orthodox Church Ohrid Archbishopric as an autocephalous sister church, entering the name of its head, the Archbishop of Ohrid and Macedonia Stefan, in the holy diptychs, said the Russian Orthodox Church.

The members of the Synod expressed hope that the youngest in the family of autocephalous Orthodox churches, the Macedonian Orthodox Church Ohrid Archbishopric, will firmly preserve the holy Orthodox faith in purity and honesty and will respect the faithfulness of the Orthodox canonical tradition.

The Patriarchate of Constantinople recognised the Macedonian Orthodox Church as "Ohrid" and acknowledged its jurisdiction over "North Macedonia" in May 2022, much to the elation of the northadonian regime and their likeminded quislings in the MOC hierarchy. Adding to this underwhelming gesture, the POC left “administrative” issues to the discretion of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Subsequently, the SOC “granted” autonomy to the MOC – as its subordinate. Shortly afterwards, however, the SOC went a step further and “granted” autocephaly to the MOC. Albeit thankful, the head of the MOC claimed he would only acknowledge autocephaly "granted" by the POC. He is still waiting for it. Juxtapose that with the attitude of the POC towards Ukraine and Russia in 2018, given some of the parallels with Macedonia and Serbia. It was the POC that granted autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine and placed it under its own wing, causing an enduring rift with the Russian Orthodox Church and the latter’s own subordinate church in Ukraine (which has now split from the ROC following the commencement of the Russia-Ukraine war).

Why the different approach given the seemingly similar circumstances? For one, meddling and encouragement from the West enabled an opportunistic POC to claim a large chunk of “spiritual” territory from its greatest competitor in the Orthodox sphere. Even if the outcome was right and what many in Ukraine had hoped for, it was a decision based on power and politics, not on morality and certainly not on any genuine belief in Orthodox solidarity. Another reason is that the POC does not view the SOC as a threat to its influence, but also does not want to push it further towards the ROC. So, rather than directly intervening in Macedonia as it did in Ukraine, the POC allowed the SOC to exhibit an oversized sense of self-importance with the matter of autocephaly for the MOC. Notably, the POC also allowed the SOC to have its way in the case of Montenegro, but in contrast to Macedonia, the notion of autocephaly in that country was completely dismissed - this despite its pro-western orientation. For its part, the SOC is treading carefully to maintain relations with both the POC and the ROC and has not yet recognised the autocephaly "granted" by the POC to the OCU. Note that the ROC recognised the autocephaly of the MOC at the behest of the SOC, perhaps to retain some influence in the region. Although it was not prepared to do the same for its own subordinate church in Ukraine, the actions of the ROC are more consistent (but not necessarily justifiable) than those of the POC.

The whole thing is a mess. The POC doesn’t acknowledge the Macedonian character of the MOC. The Bulgars, although establishing communion, continue to follow the lead of the Greeks and bitch about the name of the MOC. The Serbs and Russians acknowledge the name of the MOC and the autocephalous status “granted” by the SOC, whereas Archbishop Stefan of the MOC refers to that autocephaly as a recommendation and is waiting for some Turkish national in Istanbul to issue a new decree as validation. Not that the SOC should have had any jurisdiction in Macedonia to begin with, but what was the impetus for doing something in 2022 that they could have done decades ago? Were they afraid of a scenario similar to what occurred in Ukraine, where the POC became directly involved? Were they pressed by the West, either directly or via POC proxies, to “reward” the northadonian regime for demonstrating an unflinching commitment to national and cultural suicide on the one hand, and to eliminate the potential for any meaningful camaraderie with the ROC on the other? Were they promised something else? Whatever the case may be, the ROC vs POC dispute has turned into just another component of the larger Russia vs West debacle.
