    Tension Between Greece and Albania

Greek Foreign Ministry summons Albanian ambassador over shooting, to lodge demarche

The Greek Foreign Ministry is to lodge a demarche to Albanian authorities over the fatal shooting of a 35-year-old ethnic Greek in a village in southern Albanian on Sunday.

The ministry is to lodge the complaint officially with the Albanian Ambassador, Dashnor Dervishi, who was summoned on Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile sources at the Greek Police (ELAS) said there was no evidence, nor witness accounts, linking the exchange of fire in Albanian on Sunday night to the raising of a Greek flag at a cemetery for Greek soldiers by 35-year-old Konstantinos Katsifas.

Greek Police are cooperating with their Albanian counterparts in the investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding Katsifas's death.

According to ELAS, Katsifas and other members of the Greek community in Vouliarates participated in putting up Greek flags to commemorate Greece's entry to WWII against Italy on Sunday without any problems being reported.

Some reports have indicated that Katsifas, dressed in army fatigues, fired a Kalashnikov assault rifle into the air and then at an Albanian police patrol car.

The car is said to have been hit twice while 17 bullet casings were found at the scene.

There followed a chase, special forces were dispatched, helicopters sent out, and Katsifas was killed in an exchange of fire.

Eight bullet casings were said to have been found next to Katsifas's body along with a bag of around 100 rounds of ammunition as well as a military-style knife and noose.

Meanwhile Macedonia wants an agreement which will deny its ability to respond in a similar situation.

        From protothema

The Albanian political party “Omonia” which represents the Greek ethnic minority in the country said the killing of Konstantinos Katsifas at the village of Vouliarates on Sunday by Albanian special police forces was an “execution”.

In a written statement, the party accused the Albanian police of failing to observe the “proper rules of engagement” which resulted in the unjust death of the young man from North Epirus. The statement also accused Tirana of exercising psychological warfare against the Greek ethnic minority, as well as a portion of Albanian media for the outburst of anti-Greek propaganda that has been intensifying in recent times.

According to Himara.gr, in the football match of Partizan Tirana and Skenderbey Korce, the fans of the first placed a banner that has nothing to do with football.

“A Greek dead, one bastard less”, it reads being the continuation of the “nationalist delirium” as the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has called it.

His brother Olsi Rama is Director of the Partizani Football Club.

The owner of the club is the infamous Gammend Demi, a member of the Chams’ lobby and a financier of their activities.

The banner is in reference to the incident that took place last Sunday, where a member of the Greek minority in Albania exchanged fire with Albanian police and got killed.

However, the exact conditions under which he was killed are not clear, as there are strong indications that the Albanian Police Special Forces executed him point-blank.

The incident has caused the further deterioration of the Greek-Albanian relations.

Албанските медиуми објавија дека е убиен Константинос Кацифас (35) кој пукал од калашников кон албанските полицајци кои го симнувале знамето.

Meanwhile NMK believes that in this hyper nationalist region bending over backwards and appeasing everyone is going to get you somewhere. These people are ready to kill each other, you can not reason with these maniacs, all you can do is look out for yourself and your people, otherwise they will walk all over you, and they do.

Government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos on Monday called on Albanian authorities to avoid inflammatory rhetoric in the wake of the fatal shooting of an ethnic Greek man by Albanian police in southern Albania on Sunday.

"Greek authorities are taking all necessary actions foreseen in such circumstances to determine the exact circumstances of the death of the ethnic Greek in Albania," Dimitris Tzanakopoulos told Open television channel.

Greek authorities are in contact with their Albanian counterparts, he said, adding that there should be no rush to draw conclusions.

He added that the Albanian government should not be aggressive in its response to an incident involving the loss of a life to ensure that social tensions are not stoked.

He appeared to be referring to a tweet by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama describing the ethnic Greek man as "a crazy person."

A brawl between Greeks and Albanians in Gerakas, eastern Attica, in the early hours of Monday, left six people injured. One of the injured, a Greek man, had a serious wound to his neck.

It appears that the clash might have been a response to news about the shooting in Albania.

Wow this has really kicked off hasn't it? Maybe now Greece will realise the true threat to Balkan security is a Greater Albania not a United Macedonia
I know of two tragic histories in the world- that of Ireland, and that of Macedonia. Both of them have been deprived and tormented.

One would argue that competing ethnic claims/nationalisms are the true threat. Whenever you see or hear Greater this or that - look out!

In the case of Bularat though, I don't see how this incident has got anything to do with Greater Albania?

It doesn't per say, but Greece is so concenered about us whilst it's clear their attention should be on Albania

In general in Greece we don't worry about Albania and we're for a Greater Albania or a Greater Bulgaria (as a solution for the name dispute). This is NOT the official policy (which is that we're against any border change), but people like Samaras or Papathemelis have gone as far as stating it publicly.

Greater Albania and greater Bulgaria include sizable territory from Greece and your bff Serbia. Morons like Samaras seem to forgot that such a thing will have spillover effects.

You do realise both those irredentist concepts involve the annexation of what is currently Greek territory?

We meant Greater, not... Greatest. Samaras indeed believed we can handle the short and long-term effects. That's not the problem.

The thing is that Greece would not participate in such events; Greece can not really trigger them or control the outcome; we can only tolerate them and hope for the best.

No clue what you're saying. Both Greater Albania and Greater Bulgaria in all their definitions refer to the incorporation of current Greek territory into their respective states, this is not measurable.
