Why Greece will have to leave the eurozone
    By Desmond Lachman
    Published: January 11 2010 20:03

"This experience informs me that, much lik......e Argentina a decade ago, Greece is approaching the final stages of its currency arrangement. There is every prospect that within two to three years, after much official money is thrown its way, Greece’s euro membership will end with a bang."

"The next stage on the road to ruin occurs when the country pursues domestic policies that are inconsistent with its new currency arrangement. In recent years Athens has thrown any notion of budget discipline to the wind. Euro membership supposedly obliges a country to abide by the Maastricht criteria of keeping its budget deficit below 3 per cent of gross domestic product and its public debt-to-GDP ratio below 60 per cent. Greece’s budget deficit has widened to 12.7 per cent of GDP, while its debt-to-GDP ratio is projected to reach 120 per cent in 2010."

Its not looking too good for our neighbours, monetary wise. Is the next step to take the "Argentinian way", and what consequences will that have? Greece Euro membership and lies will end with a bang. I like the sound of that.

Shulz: Date of negotiations in June

Member of the European Parliament for Germany Martin Schulz thinks that the date for the beginning of negotiations with the Republic of Macedonia will be set in June.

Group of European socialists support the expansion of the European Union and the membership of former Yugoslavian countries, said Schulz to Deutsche Welle in the Macedonian language.

Schulz said that they had to be serious because there were severe problems between Macedonia and Greece that burdened the European integration process. The European Parliament had requested that the date for Macedonia should be set, but the European Council had failed to adopt the recommendation.

People like to complicate things. This is a simple problem with a simple solution for the EU.

      A) Make it loud and clear to Macedonia that theres more of a chance for Hell to freeze over before they can enter. Then Macedonia can move on and end of story.

      B) Remove the Biggest problem Greece or change your rules regarding veto. Again, end of story and problem solved.

Heated EP debate on Macedonia-Greece dispute

Meeting of the European Parliament delegation, which acted as preparation for the EU-Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee, concluded with a heated debate between German and Greek MEPs on the Macedonia name dispute.

Instead of debating on Macedonia's progress, as proposed by Committee chairman Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, the focus was put on the name issue, reports Deutsche Welle in Macedonian Language.

Immediately after the introductory address of Macedonia's ambassador to the EU, Blerim Reka, the debate got out of control, mainly due to opposing name stances.

Ambassador Reka stressed the country has met all conditions for beginning of European Union accession negotiations, but is faced with the name issue, which has turned into an "unwritten" criterion that could hamper the process of Macedonia's Euro-integration.

"I said in my speech that the Macedonian Government and society have continually demonstrated constructiveness in finding a solution. The 1995 Interim Treaty in Article 11 stipulates that the first party, i.e. Greece, has no right prevent Macedonia's accession to international institutions", said ambassador Reka.

On the other hand, Greek MEPs Georgios Koumoutsakos and Anni Podimata, supported by Bulgarian deputy Evgeni Kirilov, insisted on several occasions for good neighborly relations, asking the Macedonian authorities to refrain from provoking their neighbors. According to them, the name issue is not only bilateral, with Kirilov asking for reevaluation which of the two sides demonstrates constructiveness and readiness for compromise.

German MEPs Michael Cramer and Martin Kastler, along with Romanian Monica Macovei claimed this is a bilateral problem, an issue that others cannot understand, but one that blocks Macedonia's NATO and EU accession. They asked that the name issue does not prevent Macedonia's Euro-Atlantic integration.

"We cannot understand, this is a big problem because we cannot perceive Greece's veto to Macedonia's NATO accession. This is a topic for large debate between the two countries, which is necessary, but we want to solve other problems", stressed Cramer.

Greek MEP Nikolaos Salavrakos, vice-chairman of the EP delegation, asked the Macedonian ambassador to refer to his country under the interim reference.

"To me, the name is Macedonia and I am the ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia, which is the country's constitutional name. This is the only name I will use", stressed Reka.

Salavrakos said he would not travel to Skopje for the Joint Parliament Committee meeting on February 18-19.

Delegation chairman Chatzimarkakis announced he would be present at the Skopje meeting.

"I expect we will refer to the country's economic progress, reforms and environment protection, Ohrid Framework Agreement implementation and minority rights", added Chatzimarkakis.

He did not want to speak about the name issue, saying the enthusiasm following the election of the new Greek government was still there.

MEP Chatzimarkakis reiterated his idea on Javier Solana's role in finding a solution to the name dispute in the course of the Spanish EU Presidency.

        A) Good response Blerim Reka but i would have finished it off with "SO GO AND FUCK YOUR SELF SALAVRAKOS"

B)You can talk about minority rights Chatzimarkakis. You have plenty of experiance. So can your pichka Bulgarian deputy Evgeni Kirilov.

              MEPs support Macedonia report amendments

he European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee backed early Wednesday the amendments to the Macedonia Report, submitted by Slovenian MEP and country Rapporteur Zoran Thaler, which require a date for beginning of EU accession talks in March.

Fifty-six MEPs voted in favor of the amendments, five were against, with five abstaining.

"I see this as a positive development for Macedonia. This is an important political signal by the Parliament to the Commission and the Council of Ministers, and primarily to the governments in Skopje, Athens and Sofia", said Thaler at a press conference after the vote.

In the amendments, Thaler expresses concern over the postponement of negotiations by the EU Council of Ministers in December.

Before i call Slovenia our true friend, i would love to see whats in the amendments.

Paper: Mak Constitutional Court is under the influence of the Opposition

Government and the Constitutional Court of Macedonia are holding fierce war, which has gone for two years now, newspaper Nova Makedonija writes today.

During those two years, the court prevented a number of government projects and legal frameworks, and is now to set aside another four bills of the lustration law.

The government accused the constitutional court that it is under the influence of the opposition party SDSM and purposely stops government projects. When it comes to the Lustration law, the Constitutional Court decided to not release the names of journalists, politicians who collaborated with the secret police.

Though most Macedonians are aware who these people are, the uproar came after the Constitutional Court decided to hide the names specifically during the reign of Branko Crvenkovski.

reading a bit more about it, acording to Nova Makedonija artical,

Quote: " Given that the Constitutional Court is elected at the time of the political might of Branko Crvenkovski, the removal of lustration after 1991 has a single goal. It is citizens not receive a response if Crvenkovski and other officials of the SDSM had control over the secret services, abusing them, in violation of the Constitution and laws, calculating with his political opponent - said Silvana Boneva from VMRO - DPMNE".

Macedonia's Communists try to unify to overthrow Govt

Around 10 small parties in Macedonia have formed an oppositional front against the government, led by the leader of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) Branko Crvenкovski, Macedonian Kanal 5 television informed.

“It is time for actions, opposition and front,” the slogan of the opposition reads.
“It is not important whether Nikola Gruevski fears. Obviously, he will be defeated at the next parliamentary elections,” Crvenкovski said.

“Gruevski has been ruling Macedonia for eight years" exclaimed Crvenkovski. "We have seen nothing during Gruevski's ruling but lots of monuments and holes,” said leader of New Alternative Georgi Orovcanec. The coalition announced they have been opened not only for new parties but also for non-governmental organizations and independent intellectuals.

Macedonian media informed leaders of SDSM, New Social Democratic Party, New Alternative, Movement for National Unification of Turks, Democratic Union of Vlachs, Union of Tito’s Left Forces, Civil-Liberal Party, Pensioners Party, Progressive Party and the Green party have signed an agreement Monday on common political action.

The above parties have no members in parliament, the SDSM being the only exception.

The Opposition may have a tough time ousting Gruevski, even though through their media are in campaign mode for almost a year now.

Crvenkovski's led opposition has supported Athens in the name dispute, going as far as to side with the neighbor regardless what their proposal is. They have also been against building new schools, hospitals, tennis courts, monuments, football stadiums, highways... The opposition also protested against raising salaries and pensions. Lastly, the SDSM opposition also found a problem and mocked the visa liberalization with their Brussels based journalist lobbying against it.
