"... their character, their aspirations, with the mongrel subjects of the Porte, who are the descendants of the Genovese, Venetian or French settlers in the Levant, and how, though they use the Romaic as their vernacular, disdain to be called Greek, but classify themselves, by a religions instand of a national distinction, as Catholics." |

![]() Greek Songwriter Takis Mousafiris Passes Away
URL: https://greekreporter.com/2021/03/11...usafiris-dies/ Popular Greek composer and songwriter Takis Mousafiris has passed away, his family announced on Thursday. According to a statement released by his loved ones, Mousafiris had been diagnosed with Covid-19 a week prior to his death, but eventually succumbed to cancer, from which he had been suffering for nearly a year. Mousafiris, born in the city of Ioannina in northwestern Greece, was known as a “career maker,” as the songs he wrote were often top hits across the country. He made his own career by performing and writing music and lyrics for singers in the Athenian neighborhood of Plaka in the 1980s. URL: https://www.protothema.gr/stories/ar...tragoudia-tou/ Takis Mousafiris, a Vlach by origin, was influenced, as he himself said to G. Exarchos, in his songs from the Vlach tradition. |

![]() Many years ago I would have been called crazy for asserting that there are still some Vlach-speakers in Aetolia/Acarnania.
Now, we have video evidence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_9WlJZcF04 Note, these small communities are actually "recent migrants" who arrived from the north, i.e. Epirus. The pre-existing/native population still consisted of the same stock of people and as late as 1814, Aetolia was called "Vlakia" (A Sketch of Modern and Antient Geography ... Third edition, By Samuel Butler, 1814.) Also, until relatively recently, it was claimed that "Northern Aetolia remains a desolate region, inhabited mainly by Vlach shepherds." FYI - Initially, the inhabitants of Smixi were engaged in logging and agriculture, probably living in the village all year round, while after 1700 there was a professional transformation with the vast majority of the inhabitants being cattle breeders and herdsmen and moving during the winter in Thessaly and to Epirus. At the end of the 18th century there was a great expatriation from the village, where half the families, 100 out of 200 according to tradition, led by those of Hatzigiorgoviti and Kotrotsi, under the pressure of the Pasha of Ioannina, they escaped mainly to Eastern Macedonia in the area of Eleftheroupoli (Pravi). https://vlaxoxoria.gr/smixi/ |

![]() 1) URL:
https://books.google.ca/books?id=kYk...rgolis&f=false - Vlachs were part of the population transfers towards southern areas of Greece, at the behest of Venetian rulers - It is said that that Zakynthos and Kephallonia were largely uninhabited at the time of the Venetian take-over in the late 1400s ![]() 2) URL: https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%9A...B4%CE%B1%CF%82 Kriatsi (or Kriatsio) is a mountain village in the prefecture of Phocis. The name of the village may be of Vlach origin (Το όνομα του χωριού ίσως έχει βλάχικη προέλευση). Last edited by Carlin; 03-25-2021 at 09:14 PM. |

![]() Amphipolis, would you be able to make sense for us of the following passage? Thanks.
URL: https://books.google.ca/books?id=aTj...6AEwAHoECAAQAg "... οι Αθηναίοι αποβάλανε σιγά σιγά με την αύξηση του πληθυσμού της Αθήνας τη βλάχικη προφορά - τους . Ο Μακρυγιάννης τον Παπαφλέσσα τονε γράφει Παπαφλέσσια και Φλέσσια , που σημαίνει ότι μίλαγε βλάχικα , ότι το σ το πρόφερνε παχύ ." (... the Athenians gradually eliminated the Vlach accent - with the increase of the population of Athens. Makrygiannis ...... which means that he spoke Vlach ...) |
