Greek Songwriter Takis Mousafiris Passes Away

Popular Greek composer and songwriter Takis Mousafiris has passed away, his family announced on Thursday.

According to a statement released by his loved ones, Mousafiris had been diagnosed with Covid-19 a week prior to his death, but eventually succumbed to cancer, from which he had been suffering for nearly a year.

Mousafiris, born in the city of Ioannina in northwestern Greece, was known as a “career maker,” as the songs he wrote were often top hits across the country.

He made his own career by performing and writing music and lyrics for singers in the Athenian neighborhood of Plaka in the 1980s.

Takis Mousafiris, a Vlach by origin, was influenced, as he himself said to G. Exarchos, in his songs from the Vlach tradition.

Many years ago I would have been called crazy for asserting that there are still some Vlach-speakers in Aetolia/Acarnania.

Note, these small communities are actually "recent migrants" who arrived from the north, i.e. Epirus. The pre-existing/native population still consisted of the same stock of people and as late as 1814, Aetolia was called "Vlakia" (A Sketch of Modern and Antient Geography ... Third edition, By Samuel Butler, 1814.) Also, until relatively recently, it was claimed that "Northern Aetolia remains a desolate region, inhabited mainly by Vlach shepherds." LOL, what's wrong with you? The establishment is obscure as it is located on what was (until recently) the main route from West to East and the district was always inhabited. I've read that the exact location and town was formed during Ottoman Empire, but I'll have to search more.

This was a flourishing industrial town until the Balkan Wars devastated the tobacco market before the two Bulgarian occupations make things even worse. I don't know when my grandmother left the town or if any of her five siblings remained there. It's certain that Kavala has been becoming more and more important while Eleutheroupolis is going down.

FYI - Initially, the inhabitants of Smixi were engaged in logging and agriculture, probably living in the village all year round, while after 1700 there was a professional transformation with the vast majority of the inhabitants being cattle breeders and herdsmen and moving during the winter in Thessaly and to Epirus.

At the end of the 18th century there was a great expatriation from the village, where half the families, 100 out of 200 according to tradition, led by those of Hatzigiorgoviti and Kotrotsi, under the pressure of the Pasha of Ioannina, they escaped mainly to Eastern Macedonia in the area of Eleftheroupoli (Pravi).

- It is said that that Zakynthos and Kephallonia were largely uninhabited at the time of the Venetian take-over in the late 1400s

Kriatsi (or Kriatsio) is a mountain village in the prefecture of Phocis. The name of the village may be of Vlach origin (Το όνομα του χωριού ίσως έχει βλάχικη προέλευση).
