A simple example:

People are sitting home not working not collecting a paycheck. They can't pay rent, so they pass a law that for 3 months there is a grace period and you cant evict anyone. Three months go by now they have to pay 4 months of rent at once. A lot of people hardly pay the rent month to month when they have a job. There is no way they are paying 4 months at once. Now the landlords have a choice, eat 3 months of rent or evict all their tenants. In large apartments complexes that are leveraged the building owners may no be able to make mortgage payments. Now the bank has a choice, eat 3 months of payments are foreclose. Now the bank is going to go to the government and say they are at risk of collapse because of too many defaults.

In heavily leveraged western economies everything is connected, everything is a circle. You cant just turn the switch off and then turn it back on and start from where you left off as if nothing happened. Someone somewhere in the circle has to eat these months where business activity is at a standstill.

If the government tries to foot the entire bill then they will just run up huge deficits that will require either large cuts to budgets or will need to raise a lot more revenue.

Some industries will be alright but as a whole I cant come up with a logical scenario where there wont be a lot of economic pain.
There are so many questions yet to be answered, the full extent of the problem is unknown, it is literally a day-by-day prospect at the moment.
The economy can't function on a day-by-day basis, it requires a fair degree of certainty and forward planning...

In Macedonia... a sharp verbal confrontation between the leaders of the Islamic Community there, Sulejman Rexhepi, and political leaders is underway.

Rexhepi warned the Macedonian authorities that he would withhold support from the Government's anti-coronavirus measures if his organization did not receive
financial support. The Islamic community leader also warned that he would withdraw the ban on gathering in Mosques.

Supermarket boss’s blunt reply to toilet paper hoarder wanting refund

A supermarket manager has ripped into a stockpiler who tried to get a refund on almost 5000 rolls of toilet paper he couldn’t sell online.

A supermarket boss has given one of his customers the bird after it’s claimed the man tried to return almost 5000 rolls of toilet paper and 150 bottles of hand sanitiser which he couldn’t sell online.

John-Paul Drake, an executive with South Australian supermarket chain Drakes, said he refused to give the man a refund.

In a video uploaded to YouTube, Mr Drake said recent panic buying of toilet paper had been “absolutely ridiculous” with the company selling eight months’ worth in four days at one point.

But one customer’s behaviour was worse than the others.

“I had my first customer yesterday who said he wanted to get a refund on 150 packets of 32-pack toilet paper and 150 units of one-litre sanitiser.” In 150 packs of 32-roll toilet paper there would be 4800 individual rolls.

I would call his bluff and say go ahead and fill the mosques. Call it Darwinism. They mostly socialize in their own communities anyway so if he wants an outbreak in his own community then go for it.

My hometown. God's country. Full of morons, like anywhere else, sadly. Toilet paper still isn't easy to find. Lucky I have a Japanese toilet seat. (But that's another discussion)

Scenes of protests across the country demanding states reopen the economy amid coronavirus pandemic

URL:
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/18/coro...e-economy.html

This past week saw a number of protests spring up around the country demanding the reopening of the U.S. economy as cases of coronavirus now surpass 700,000. Protesters in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Michigan, Minnesota, Idaho and California gathered in cities and outside their state legislatures to demand the reopening of the economy.

President Donald Trump seemingly tweeted his support for the protesters to “LIBERATE” Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia, whose Democratic governors are still grappling with a rise of coronavirus cases.
