Pomaks are most likely islamized Macedonian and/or Bulgarians, probably both but since they became muslim(it`s unknown when), they are living in harmony with Turks in Balkans and Turkey for centuries. So, they are similar in that sense with Torbeshi of Macedonia.
Pomak language has absolutely no relation with Greek language cuz they mostly had no contact with Greeks throughout history. Pomaks says that it`s an amalgam of Macedonian, Bulgarian and Turkish. It`s a product of cultural interaction for a long time(most likely centuries). Pomaks are also bilingual for centuries. They speak Turkish as well as their own language. So, it`s like Romaika speakers of Anatolia in that sense since most Romaika speakers was also speaking Turkish.
This video you see here is from Greece and thats why the speaker has Greekish accent. Normally, there is no Greek connection with Pomak language but in western Thrace, they educate them in Greek for some time. Also it`s rather interesting and ironic that while Greek policy calls Turkish people in western Thrace as "muslim Hellenes" and continuously deny Macedonian identity, they are so fond of ~20.000 Pomaks in western Thrace. They are doing this to divide Turks with Pomaks cuz Pomaks only lives with Turks in western Thrace since it`s not that possible to live in other areas of Greece by being a muslim. They also spread ridicules stuff like Pomaks are supposedly an Hellenic squad in the Alexander the Great`s army in Persian wars(descendants of ancient Hellenes story as usual!). This propaganda is done by Karazaferis and his party LAOS. LAOS also continuously demanded for Pomak language programs in Greek tv channels and radios in the name of minority rights of them!!!(minority rights and LAOS! whatta combination)
Most of the Pomaks came to Turkey in 1878 cuz Bulgarians/Russians expelled them along with Turks in 1878 Russian-Turkish war. As far as i remember from a Turkish web site for Pomaks, there are about 250.000 Pomaks in Turkey, 150.000 in Bulgaria and about 20.000 in Greece(western Thrace only)Last edited by Onur; 01-19-2011, 04:24 PM.

The Pomaks in Eastern Aegean Macedonia and Thrace have won the right to broadcast news in their own native language?!? When will the Macedonians in the rest of Aegean Macedonia win the same right??? Also, who standardized the Pomak language for the news? Whose idea was it to use the Latin alphabet, the Greek government?

Thank you Onur for the information, but don't forget there are also a few Macedonian Pomaks in the eastern most region of Aegean Macedonia, mostly around Kavala. The villages of Kavala were heavily populated with Macedonian Muslims 100 years ago, but they were mostly exiled to Turkey.

I can hear a Greek accent which I am positive would not have existed 100 years ago. Other than that, it has much more to do with Macedonian than any other language.

They did same for christian Gagauz Turks in Greece and now they aim for Pomaks.
So, atm still the word "Turk, Turkish" is forbidden to use in Greece for any school or association and several people gone jail because of this but contrary, it`s encouraged to use "Pomak"!!!
Also Pomaks traditionally uses Cyrillic to write their own language but it looks like Greeks doesn't prefer that and they use some weird Greekish Pomak language speaker as an anchor.

I wonder where you saw the Greece influence and accent. They only use some Greek words for modern terms (e.g. police, antenna, strike, identity card etc).
Originally posted by Onur View PostActually they didn't win, correct term would be "awarded" cuz i am following eastern Thrace media and web sites and i read a lot of articles about Pomaks in eastern Thrace. Karazaferis and his gang in LAOS party demanded Pomak language broadcast in Greek tv channels, radio stations and they gave lots of letter of application to the parliamentary. They were saying that Pomaks should be set free from the "grasp of Turks"!!!
I don't think Greece intends to violate Lausanne Treaty, thus these people live in Greece and have a Turkish education. Their original language is mostly lost now and they are a (rather distinct) part of the Muslim minority of Thrace.

I hear a combination of 'Bulgarian' and 'Greek' accents and stress in that Pomaks voice. So in general he sounds like he is speaking Macedonian and some Turkish with a stick up his ass ('Bulgarian') and a dildo down his throat (the 'Greek' contibution)..
The language sounds very harsh to my ears, just saying.

Can you mention one (1) of these several people?
Pomaks don't have a tradition of... writing in their language using any alphabet. I believe a first dictionary of their supposed language appeared in the 90s. Of course Greeks don't want to admit this is basically a version of Bulgarian language (by the way, is it?) so it was often presented as a unique thing.
