After saying something about their language
he tells the reader that "they don‘t want to be either Bulgar, or Srrp, or Grrts. Only Makedon Ortodox" (Mackridge, 2009: 303). In later editions, Mackridge (2009: 303) writes "Myrivilis excised the last sen-tence because he no longer felt it to be politically advisable to include it" and that "The novel was banned from 1936 until the end of the Second World War; subsequent editions do not include this sentence."

I took the liberty and moved your post to a separate thread Lorenzo, it is a great and valuable find which deserves a topic on its own. Keep up the good work!

Lorenzo has posted the 1924 edition of the book which was republished in 1991 as stated on the front page. Does anyone have any later edition of the book so we can see the revised part? Lorenzo do you have it maybe?

I think that Peter Mackridge has produced some interesting sources, but that ultimately he is a phil-hellene.

This is a good source, particularly given that Lorenzo has provided a version prior to the latter versions which were manipulated so that they make no reference to Macedon Orthodox. 20th century Greeks often recorded the existence of Macedonians and the Macedonian language. Some 21st century Greeks either have amnesia or are in a permanent state of denial.

On Delchev's sarcophagus you can read the following inscription: "We swear the future generations to bury these sacred bones in the capital of Independent Macedonia. August 1923 Illinden"

"they don‘t want to be either Bulgar, or Srrp, or Grrts. Only Makedon Ortodox"
Myrivilis entered the words uttered by his Macedonian hosts as he heard them into his book. In proper English the sentence will read like this:
"they do not want to be either Bulgarian, or Serbian, or Greek. Only Christian Macedonians."
