Whilst everyone talks about purity when it comes to the Balkans.
I want to put forward my case for virginal purity here.
You see, it is like this ... most Macedonians never had the chance to educate themselves. They kept under the radar by working in the fields and tending to their cattle etc. They did not have to abandon any previous cultures to become something else. They were what was left over after everyone else became endowed with nations in the early to mid 19th century.
Nobody encouraged our identity, yet we remain.
So what is purity? I do not mean it in a genetic sense. Rumour has it that the Turk leader of each village had his way with only the prettiest of girls in the village. Since I am very pretty, I can only assume that one of my ancestors was possibly a victim of this kind of horror. I have dark hair and pale skin ... and looks to die for .. laydeez. My brother is a giant and has fair hair ... so clearly many variations exist here.
I mean purity in the sense that the Macedonian identity has forged itself over many hundreds/thousands of years. It did not have to go through an awakening and cleansing. I take great joy in the comfort my people of Egej have when they arrive in Bitola and feel very comfortable with the language and surroundings. And understand that they still belong.
We Macedonians have not become anything else. That is pure. When I hear about the Arvanites and how the Greeks purposefully advise me of their Greekness, well ... sorry, they might be good Greeks ... but not pure in the way I am talking about.
